Delete Your Account
Last Updated: July 13, 2026 · Effective Date: July 13, 2026
You can delete your profFinder account, and the personal data attached to it, at any time. You do not need to contact us and you do not need a reason.
This page explains how to do it, exactly what is removed, and the small amount we are legally required to keep.
1. Deleting your account from the app
This is the fastest route, and it is available to anyone who can still sign in. Your account and its data are deleted without anyone at profFinder having to act on the request.
- Open profFinder and sign in.
- Go to Settings → Account.
- Choose Delete account.
- Confirm your identity when prompted — your password, your two-factor code, or a fresh Google sign-in.
- Confirm the deletion.
The identity check exists so that someone with brief access to an unlocked phone cannot destroy your account. It is the only thing standing between a borrowed device and permanent data loss, so it is deliberately not optional.
Deletion begins immediately and cannot be undone. There is no restore, no grace period and no archived copy to recover from.
2. If you cannot sign in
Email privacy@proffinder.app from the address on the account and ask us to delete it. We will verify that the request genuinely comes from the account holder before acting — a deletion request we cannot attribute is a way to erase someone else's account, so we would rather delay a real request than honour a forged one.
Once verified, we run the same deletion as the in-app path. We aim to complete verified requests within 30 days.
3. What is deleted
Deleting your account removes the personal information profFinder holds about you, including:
- Your account: name, email addresses, password, profile photo, country and account preferences
- Your student profile: education history, research interests, target programmes, publications, skills and academic goals
- Uploaded and generated documents: résumés, CVs, transcripts, tailored résumés and the text extracted from them
- Your Google and Gmail connection, including stored access and refresh tokens
- Outreach data: drafted, saved and sent messages, professor contacts you used, reply and thread status
- Your activity: swipes, saves, matches, rejections, searches and recommendation history
- Notification settings and device push tokens
Disconnecting Gmail removes our stored access to your mailbox. It does not delete anything from your own Gmail account — messages you sent through profFinder remain in your Sent folder, where only you control them. You can also revoke our access at any time from your Google account permissions page.
4. Deleting some of your data without closing your account
You do not have to delete your whole account to remove data you no longer want us to hold. From inside the app you can delete individual items at any time, and each deletion takes effect immediately:
- Résumés, CVs, transcripts and other uploaded documents — delete them individually from Documents or Résumés
- Tailored résumés and generated document versions
- Saved professors, matches and custom contacts
- Your Gmail and Google connection — disconnect it to remove our stored access tokens, which also stops all reply tracking
- Registered devices, which removes the push notification token for that device
- Two-factor authentication enrolment, which removes the stored secret
If you want something deleted that you cannot remove yourself, email privacy@proffinder.app describing what you want removed. We will confirm your identity and tell you what we can delete and what we are required to keep.
5. What we keep, and why
Two things survive deletion, and neither identifies you as a user of the service.
Payment and tax records
If you ever paid for a subscription, the transaction records are kept for ten years from the end of the year of the transaction. This is a legal obligation under EU VAT rules for non-Union OSS, not a business preference, and it applies regardless of where you live. These records cover what was charged and when — they are not your profile, your documents or your outreach.
A deletion record
We keep a minimal, non-identifying record that an account was deleted and when. It contains no name, no email address and no profile data. It exists so we can prove a deletion was carried out if you or a regulator ever ask.
Backups
Backups taken before your deletion may still contain your information until they age out on their normal cycle. They are not used to restore deleted accounts.
Professor information
Publicly sourced information about professors, labs and publications is not personal information about you and is unaffected by deleting your account.
6. Cancelling a subscription first
If you have an active paid subscription, cancel it before deleting your account, so that billing stops cleanly and you keep a record of the cancellation.
- Bought through Google Play: cancel in the Play Store under Payments and subscriptions.
- Bought through the App Store: cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
- Bought by card on the web: cancel from the Billing screen in profFinder.
A subscription bought through a store is controlled by that store. We cannot cancel it for you, and deleting your profFinder account does not cancel it.
7. Questions
Write to privacy@proffinder.app for anything about deletion or your data rights, or to support@proffinder.app for help using the app. Our Privacy Policy, at proffinder.app/privacy, explains what we collect and how long we keep it.
